Laser Surgery

We recommend you first try the new "continuous wear" contact lenses, a good alternative to surgery.

These new lenses are comfortable to wear and there is usually no daily cleaning and handling required for a month at a time. Like lasik you can see well 24 hours a day. Unlike lasik this is reversible and if your eyesight changes at a later date you can have a change of power.

Over the age of 45 close work becomes a problem even if you have had lasik and reading spectacles are then needed. Your "continuous wear" contact lenses however can then be altered to allow good vision and therefore no need for spectacles. For more information click here.

What is possible?

With the new machines available, more accurate results are being achieved by Ophthalmologists (medical doctors specialised in eyecare) and more conditions are able to be treated.

Short sighted, long sighted and astigmatic patients can be operated on now. The procedure is less accurate the more refraction there is. Before you visit the Ophthalmologist, your Optometrist can advise you on the likely outcome and risks.

Two Lasik Clinics in Christchurch NZ

The lasik procedure involves creating a flap from the cornea and folding it back (see the lower diagram). Then the laser is used to accurately reshape the inner cornea and then the flap of cornea is put back onto the cornea.

The advantages of this procedure over PRK are less irritation and more convenience as the second eye can be treated at the same time.

The disadvantage is that this procedure is relatively new, no long term (>10yrs) data is available and there is a very small risk the flap can get contaminated during the operation or the flap becomes detached by accident.

The referring Optometrist will usually perform the follow up schedule of eye examinations, to look for signs of corneal haze, measure intraocular pressures and measure the new refraction of the eye. The Optometrist will then send a report through to the Lasik Clinic.
